The Miracle of Cardiff: Steven Gerrard Goal Against West Ham FA Cup Final 2006

During his 710 appearances for Liverpool across a 17-year professional career at Anfield, Gerrard notched a catalogue of iconic goals; with his strike in May 2006 against the Hammers, along with his header against AC Milan in Istanbul the previous year, regarded as two of his finest in a red shirt.

The following season, Gerrard scored 23 goals in 53 games, which saw him win his only PFA Player of the Year trophy. He also played an integral part in Liverpool winning the 2006 FA Cup, scoring twice against West Ham United in the final. As it turned out, this was last major trophy of his career. Though he continued to play at a high level for a long time, Liverpool never managed to win the coveted Premier League title.

A year after they had won the Champions League, Liverpool reached the FA Cup final in 2006 against West Ham and this time it was Liverpool who were the favourites. However, West Ham took a shock lead in the game and were cruising at 2-0 until Gerrard once again stepped up to the plate. He laid on the assist for the first goal and then rifled in an equaliser to make it 2-2 on the day.

Steven Gerrard has a long history of scoring some wonderful goals against their arch-rivals Everton, but he took it one step further by scoring a hat-trick against them in the Premier League in what was his 400th appearance for the club. Gerrard started the scoring 11 minutes from halftime and then added a second after the restart. He completed his hat trick in the dying minutes of the game and became the first Liverpool player to score a hat-trick against Everton in a local derby game in nearly 30 years.
